<p>One local school prints a figure. Earl Jones Music School, on Center Street, teaches voice among its instruments and posts $120.00 per month for one 30-minute lesson per week, which is a monthly block rather than a price per hour. The Charles Coakley, Jr. Conservatory on Dewitt Street also teaches voice, offers a trial at no cost and publishes no rate; Justian Time Music School on Dennis Road publishes none either. Ours is quoted per lesson and starts at $29, with the trial before it free.</p>
<p>The Marine screening round settles this better than any argument could. Applicants send audio or video recordings of specified excerpts, and the people listening have nothing but the file, with no story attached about who has a gift. What they are grading is how the excerpt was prepared. That is the honest content of the word talent almost everywhere it gets used. Preparation is visible in a recording, and it is available to anybody willing to make one.</p>
<p>Around seven suits a child, given a brief lesson in which the ear does the heavy part. Adolescence is the stretch to work through, not the one to wait out; an instrument mid-rebuild still needs supervision. For adults, no year closes the door. St. Anne's puts its own floor at 16 and adds that no prior training is needed, and the college choir asks for no audition at all, so the local institutions have already answered the age question more generously than most people expect.</p>
<p>Work backwards from a real date and the answer gets concrete. Registration for the state honors chorus closes on September 10, and the eastern audition in Fayetteville falls sixteen days after that. Sixteen days is enough to make one piece reliable and not enough to change the instrument playing it. A season is enough to change how a phrase is supported. Sight-reading in front of a placement director is the slow one, nearer a full year of weekly work than a single season, which is why it is the item to begin first and the item almost no one does.</p>
<p>They work because what gets corrected is a sensation rather than a sound in a room. Your teacher hears where the tone goes thin and says so while you can still feel the throat that produced it. There is a second reason that belongs to this city specifically. Orders arrive with dates on them, and the question is never whether you can find another teacher in the next town but whether you have to start the explaining over. A lesson with no street address of its own does not make you start over.</p>

The places here that publish an entry rule all print the same one: none. The community choir at the college calls itself a non-auditioned community based SATB choir. St. Anne's says no prior training is needed. Trinity Methodist welcomes high school and adult singers to join in. Onslow Winds, which is a band rather than a chorus, describes its membership as voluntary. Read that alongside one statistic and it stops looking like generosity: 27.9 percent of this city's residents lived somewhere else a year ago.
This city is built for arriving, not for staying. The Coastal Carolina Community Choir is formally a course you re-enroll in, MUS-131-02 Chorus I, meeting Mondays from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. in room FA112. The adult choir at St. Anne's Episcopal on Henderson Drive rehearses Sundays straight after the 10:00 a.m. service and takes everyone aged 16 and up. The Chancel Choir at Trinity Methodist rehearses each Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., except in July. J.T. Kerr Memorial Baptist keeps four separate choirs going, one of them meeting on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. With 25,617 people here in the Armed Forces against 19,755 in the entire civilian labor force, a closed roll would be an expensive habit. What is scarce is not the way in. It is the second year.
The question worth asking in this city is not who can hear you now. It is who will remember in April what your voice was doing in February. Onslow Winds describes its own musicians as teachers, military spouses and service members, retirees, high school and college students, which is an honest picture of who is here and for how long. Progress in singing is mostly a comparison against your own past, so somebody has to be holding that past. A semester boundary does not reset a private record of it.
The Marine Corps enlists through the Musician Enlistment Option Program, which names instrumentalists and vocalists alike, and MOS 5567 is Musician, Vocalist. Read its sequence as a syllabus. The screening round wants audio or video recordings of specified excerpts, so intonation has to survive playback and a phrase has to hold its air to the end. The live round has you sight-read, which means reading fluent enough to be useful with a stranger watching. Underneath both sits the seam where your low voice hands off to your high one.
The college choir is a semester you enroll in again. Trinity's Chancel Choir stops for July. Onslow Winds is active from March to August and at the holidays. Earl Jones Music School sells a month at a time. Those four calendars are built to be joined, which is a different thing from being built to be continued. You keep the same teacher across a set of orders, and the eight weeks you were in the middle of are still the eight weeks you are in the middle of.
Rooms flatter. A church nave hands back reverberation you did not produce, and a recital hall hands back volume you did not make. Sing the same phrase into a plain microphone and all of that goes away, leaving only what you actually did with it. That is uncomfortable for a while and then it becomes the most useful thing in the lesson, because you stop improving the room and start improving the note.
J.T. Kerr Memorial Baptist Church at 150 L.P. Willingham Parkway keeps four choirs running: One meets Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m., and three more on the first, second and third Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Sandy Run Missionary Baptist Church at 1503 Hargett Street appears on the Jacksonville-Onslow African American Heritage Trail as the oldest black church on record in the area. The trail's fourteen stops in the city include Georgetown High School at 228 Georgetown Road, founded in 1908 and the only black high school Onslow County had, and the McIver Family Legacy at 36 Kerr Street, site of McIver's Music Studio, the first African American-owned music studio. Infant of Prague lists an English choir, a Spanish choir and Gregorian chant among its liturgical music. And on selected Fridays in summer, Jammin' Jacksonville plays the Commons Amphitheater from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Two very different people walk through those open doors. One has never sung a note alone in her life. The other has stood in a section for twenty years and has rarely heard herself alone, because a section is not built for that. Non-auditioned means neither is turned away, and it also means neither is told apart. A private hour begins wherever the person actually is, which is the one thing an open door cannot do. Seven or so does for a child, and above that no year disqualifies anybody.
Coastal Carolina Community College advertises a cafeteria shift of 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and a security post running Saturday through Monday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. City routes 101 to 104 run hourly, the first weekday departure leaving Crestfield Point Apartments eastbound at 5:55 a.m., and the last buses go before eight; the fare is $1.50 each way, or $0.75 reduced. Between a roster like that and a bus like that, a fixed evening downtown becomes a negotiation. An hour you set yourself never is, and it carries on through July, through a semester break and through a summer.
Here is what the free hour actually contains. Your teacher takes you to both ends of your range and finds where each one stops. You sing one vowel on one scale, slowly, which is duller than it sounds and shows more than anything else will. Then you sing whatever you brought. You leave with a recording of all three and one exercise with a name to work on until the next lesson. Nothing is invoiced for any of it.
Jacksonville makes it easy to begin and gives you nothing to continue with. Several choirs here admit you with no hearing at all, and the ones that publish a calendar run on a semester, a season or a summer break. More than a quarter of the city was living somewhere else twelve months ago. A standing hour at your own address holds its shape across a move, which is the one thing a semester, a season and a monthly block all fail to do. The first of them is unbilled.
