<p>Look at one of those seven calendar entries. It carries a date, a beginning, an end and the word Rehearsal, and no figure whatever - nothing about dues, nothing about a fee, nothing about what taking part costs. Our own arrangement is the other way round: a single lesson starts at $29, and nothing is owed for the trial. The entry on the wall lists a start, an end and no figure at all. One of those two documents tells you what you are agreeing to.</p>
<p>A heading that covers ushers and singers alike has never had a line for one person. A ninety-minute rehearsal is addressed to a section, a Sunday service to a congregation, a festival stage to a park - and none of those settings is built to tell one person what their voice is doing. No such setting is failing when it does not. The verdict people quote about themselves is the one no schedule ever collected.</p>
<p>Two clock times, one word, and the difference between them printed nowhere. The earliest published age in town is three, in a youth service on Shaw Road; a youth choir and a mass choir divide a Saturday morning between them at nine and at ten. Where a bracket closes, it closes because a group had to be filled - three dance classes sorted into age spans, a youth service that stops at eighteen. One person's hour needs no dividing line at all.</p>
<p>Between the September date and the December one lie five more, and January is blank. A run of hours has no blank month in it; and that single fact is the difference. The week your own voice shifts lies outside anybody's count.</p>
<p>A rehearsal needs a name because a roomful of people has to find the room. An arrangement for one singer needs no title, no category line and no directory number. Video carries the voice, the correction and the recording; what stays behind is the roomful of other singers, which is what a rehearsal exists for. The appointment arrives with its name attached, and the name is yours.</p>

Seven dated entries in the calendar of Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Church on West Oglethorpe Highway belong to the two choirs, and each carries the same title: Rehearsal. The word is the whole heading - a date, a span of time, and Rehearsal. Which choir is meant appears nowhere in it; that sits underneath, in a category line. The times answer at once. Ten o'clock on a Saturday morning, running ninety minutes, is the Mass Choir. Nine o'clock, running sixty, is the Youth Choir. On 19 December the plan shows one of those two hours, and the name it belongs to has to be looked up somewhere else.
Seven appointments, one word, two clock times. The Mass Choir has 3 October, 7 November and 5 December; the Youth Choir has 19 September, 17 October, 14 November and 19 December. A separate entry in the same calendar puts the word to work for a group that does not sing at all - the Usher Board, on a Saturday afternoon in September, in the sanctuary. So what you learn about singing here depends on which line of the plan you happen to read, and the line that tells you most is the one with the time in it.
The names do exist. They are kept in a ministry directory, numbered: the Music Department is 07, the Mass Choir is 08, the Dance Ministries are 16. A numbered entry in a directory is a fine thing for an organization and no use at all to a larynx. Nobody in a ninety-minute room can stop and say which of your registers is doing the work, because the ninety minutes belong to a blend whose last published rehearsal is in December. A directory entry has a number; a voice has none, and that is the difference an hour of teaching exists to close.
Tone leads, being the thing other people notice. The register change answers to instruction sooner than anything else does. Tuning steadies once somebody names the interval that keeps slipping. Stamina grows when the support stops being an accident. Breath underwrites all four. In the first hour you hear which of them is in your way. Some hours later you hear what changed.
A name is attached to each of the four. There is a recording that says whose voice it holds, a written plan that says what comes next, a coach already familiar with last week's song, and appointments filed under your name and not under a category. Where a category line has to be consulted, the thing above it was never addressed to you. Sixteen ministries are listed at one address on West Oglethorpe Highway; one of them carries music in its title, a second a choir, and the hour described here carries one singer.
The file needs no line underneath it saying whose it is. The date, the phrase and the voice are one object, and the correction lies across it. The audio was designed around what a singer does with a note, so the quiet places survive where a codec meant for conversation would discard them. A name settles which room to walk into. It settles nothing about Wednesday, when the room is empty again and the file is not.
The dated music in this town tends to arrive from outside the music world. The library on West Memorial Drive puts on a free outdoor concert of Afro-Cuban jazz on Saturday, 26 September 2026 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., and asks people to bring their own seating; the same library lends ukuleles. Bradwell Park on South Commerce Street holds a food truck festival on Saturday, 19 September 2026 with live entertainment named nowhere, and a Hispanic Heritage Festival on 10 October; an illuminated parade moves through South Main Street on the evening of 4 December. Bradwell Institute on Pafford Street has a chorus department under a named department chair and three choirs of its own - Beginning Choir, Bella Voce and Vox - and its winter concert was hosted in a congregation's hall rather than a school auditorium. The dated appointment comes first in every one of those cases, and the name of whoever sings arrives afterward, if at all.
Nine o'clock and ten o'clock do the sorting at one address, under one word. Elsewhere the brackets close at the top wherever a group has to be assembled: a youth service on Shaw Road runs for ages 3 to 18, and the county recreation department sorts three dance classes into 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 14. Those two Saturday times close nothing at all. They divide one morning between two groups and say no more than that. What gets counted in that one calendar is turning up.
The plan publishes four Saturdays for one group and leaves the rest of the week blank. The 19th of September, the 17th of October, the 14th of November, the 19th of December: three of the four fall on the third Saturday of their month and one on the second - a pattern that almost holds and then does not. Seven published appointments across four months, at most two in any one of them. The singing that is written down occupies a small share of the weeks available, and the rest is yours to place.
The appointment carries a start time and no heading. Into it go a question, an answer, and a phrase taken apart while both of you can still hear it. Nothing has to be memorized and nothing must be declared in advance. The first appointment is the only one in this whole arrangement that takes its name from the person inside it.
A shared word is a practical thing. One heading covers the singers, the ushers and everyone else, and the calendar stays short. The cost is small and specific: a name and a voice come apart, the name going into a numbered directory and the voice into a room with a start time. Your name appears in none of the three.
