Yes, and there is local proof. Joe Feeney was born here in 1931, sang as a boy soprano in his parish choir, and spent twenty-five years as a tenor on national television. That was taught in a church basement, not issued at birth.
About seven, in short sessions. The teenage years change the instrument physically and reward continuity. Adults begin at any age, quite often after watching a Harvest of Harmony parade go past.
Two months in, a recording of you sounds different. Twelve months in, a room does. Refinement comes after that, slowly, and it is what keeps people booking decades in.
They do. What a lesson needs is precise hearing at one end and a demonstration at the other, and a solid line delivers both. February in Nebraska supplies the remaining argument.

Grand Island sits on the Platte in Hall County, about ninety-five miles west of Lincoln and fifty east of Kearney. Around fifty-three thousand people live here and more than a third of them are Hispanic or Latino, which is what a century of railroads and half a century of meatpacking will do to a prairie town. Every spring the Platte does something remarkable: sandhill cranes stage on the river on their way north, and by late March the counts along the central Platte run into the hundreds of thousands. The Nebraska State Fair has been held here since 2010, on the Fonner Park grounds south of town.
Because the singing here is older than the city. The Liederkranz was founded in 1870 as a German singing club - two years before Grand Island was incorporated - and it is still going, with its own 1911 hall on West First Street. The Grand Island Concert Association has been bringing touring performers to town since 1931 and publishes a six-concert season; three of the six this season are vocal acts. The Grand Island Little Theatre has staged shows since 1960 and is heading into its sixty-sixth season, with two musicals in the run. And once a year the town does something that no city this size has any business doing: Harvest of Harmony, running since 1938, puts marching bands from across Nebraska down Third Street each October in a parade and a sanctioned field competition on the same day.
A singing club, a concert season and a marching-band parade are all places to perform. None of them is a place where a voice gets examined. Working out why your top notes tighten needs an hour in which the teacher has nobody else to listen to, and a plan assembled out of what the teacher heard rather than from a standard sequence.
Air is settled first, and whatever it does the layers above it copy. Then tuning that keeps its nerve with people watching, a range that arrives in one piece rather than in stages, and enough stamina left for the final number. Dynamics, diction and stage manner come last and register hardest.
Nobody is allocated whoever happened to be free; a person does the matching. The first lesson is ours. Times are yours to name and yours to move.
Everything here depends on how faithfully the line carries what you sing, so that is where the work went. An entry that comes in under the note, a syllable that lands late because the breath did - both get named before the phrase has finished. Exercises and audio stay on hand between lessons.
The Liederkranz hall on West First has been on the National Register since 1978 and still puts live music on. The state fair fills eleven days from the end of August into early September and books national acts onto the grandstand. Hear Grand Island puts free music on Friday nights at Amur Plaza in Railside through the summer. The Grand Theatre on West Third, a 1937 house of four hundred and thirty-nine seats, was rescued by volunteers in the eighties and is still open. And the singer to know about is Joe Feeney - born here in 1931, one of three brothers, a boy soprano in the parish choir who was discovered by an Omaha radio station in 1956 and spent a quarter of a century as the tenor on the Lawrence Welk Show. Henry Fonda was also born in this town, but he was an actor, and a singing page should say so rather than imply a lineage that is not there.

Packing-plant shifts, a school year that keeps moving and Nebraska winters all conspire against a weekly appointment elsewhere. A lesson that opens at home is immune to all three.
