A private hour across the Shoals generally runs $50 to $90. The trial session we open with is unbilled, so the thing you are judging is an hour of teaching rather than a price list.
Almost anyone can. The clearest local evidence is the university's own policy: the fall opera production at North Alabama is cast from singing actors of all abilities, with no audition at the door. Ability is what the work produces, not what it requires.
Seven is a reasonable floor, in lessons short enough to end while the child still wants more. Adolescence remakes the instrument, and weekly supervision beats waiting it out. Adults may begin the day they decide to, and around here a good many begin late.
Breath shifts inside a month. Standing up in a full room takes the better part of twelve months. Past that the increments shrink and get considerably more absorbing.
They do. A lesson sends a diagnosis out and brings a demonstration back, and a clean line handles the pair of them intact. It also spares you the bridge when the teacher you want is over in Colbert County.

Florence stands above the Tennessee River on its northern bank, county seat of Lauderdale County, with roughly forty-two thousand residents. It is one of four separate cities that together make up the Shoals - Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia - and the two-county area holds something over a hundred and fifty thousand people. Wire and cable, flooring, cabinets and automotive components carry the manufacturing side; the university, two hospitals and a steady flow of music pilgrims carry the rest. Birmingham is a hundred and seventeen miles off, Nashville a hundred and twenty-three, Memphis a hundred and fifty-two.
Because the training here is unusually good for the size of the town, and unusually honest about its door policy. The University of North Alabama - founded in 1830 and in Florence since 1855, which makes it the oldest state-certified university in Alabama - offers a Bachelor of Music with a vocal emphasis, and its Collegiate Singers take any enrolled student with an appetite for it. Its opera and musical theater program runs a chamber production every fall that welcomes singing actors of all abilities, and an auditioned staged work each spring. Off campus the picture narrows: the Shoals Chamber Singers, going since 1987, audition, and so does the Shoals Symphony at UNA, which has carried a roster of sixty-odd since 1985. There is no open-door adult chorus here. That is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise.
An audition is a verdict without a reason attached. Nobody hands you a list of what went wrong and in which order to fix it, because that is not what a panel is for. A weekly hour is where the reasons live - why the jaw locks a third below the note you are aiming at, why the air is gone before the phrase is.
Support comes first, and in a town that still talks in takes and overdubs the analogy holds: whatever you lay on top inherits the quality of what is underneath. Above it go pitch that does not sag once somebody is listening, a top that keeps its weight, and the reserve to sing a fourth chorus as well as you sang the first. Consonants and shaping come in at the finish, and they are what carries a lyric to the back of a room.
Rick Hall built a studio by putting the right players in the same room together; this is the small version of that, done by a human being who has looked at the repertoire you are aiming for. Nobody invoices the trial hour. The calendar is yours, moves included.
This town has known since 1959 that the recording chain is the whole argument, and we built on the same premise: the audio took the engineering and the video took what was left over. A collapsing onset, a phrase that runs dry a beat early - your teacher catches those live and repairs them inside the bar. Everything the session throws up is waiting for you midweek.
W. C. Handy was born here on the sixteenth of November 1873, in a log cabin that he later paid twenty-nine thousand dollars of his own money to save from demolition; it was numbered, dismantled, stored and rebuilt, and opened as a museum on West College Street in June 1970. He wrote Memphis Blues in 1912 and St. Louis Blues in 1914 and called himself the Father of the Blues without much argument from anyone. The festival in his name has run since 1982 and now fills ten days each July with something like two hundred and fifty events. Sam Phillips, who founded Sun Records and recorded Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, was born in Florence in January 1923. FAME - the letters stand for Florence Alabama Music Enterprises - started in 1959 in a room above the City Drug Store here before moving across the river, and Arthur Alexander cut You Better Move On in that upstairs room. Donna Jean Godchaux, born in Florence in 1947, sang on Muscle Shoals sessions and then with the Grateful Dead, came home, and died in November 2025. Single Lock Records has been run out of Florence since 2013 by Ben Tanner, John Paul White and Will Trapp. One geographical correction the local tourist copy keeps getting wrong: Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is in Sheffield, not Muscle Shoals.
Our students are spread across Lauderdale County - the Wood Avenue and Walnut Street blocks, out toward Killen and Rogersville, and up at Green Hill near the Tennessee line.
The Shoals is four separate towns and a river, and a standing appointment on the far bank is one bridge closure from falling apart. An hour that happens where you already live contains no bridge at all.
Take the free session. Bring a song you could sing in your sleep and hear what somebody trained pulls out of the first verse.
A town that produced the Father of the Blues and the man who found Elvis can reasonably be expected to turn out a few more trained voices. Begin a few streets up from the river.
