Two providers here publish a figure, in different shapes. The MSU Community Music School lists 31 dollars for 30 minutes, 46 for 45 minutes and 59.50 for an hour, across a term it gives as 17 weeks, and states that private lessons cannot be registered online. Henry Herig Music on East Grand River Avenue lists 25 dollars per half hour and 50 an hour. SIRIUS settles its rate with you up front, teaches online, and opens with a free trial lesson.
Talent is not the requirement, and Choral Union rather proves it: its placement audition asks for one verse of America, the Beautiful and its own page calls experience desirable rather than required. Range, breath and tuning respond to teaching. What separates singers over a year is usually instruction and consistency, not raw material.
The Community Music School puts the usual start for private voice at around age 16, once the instrument has matured enough for work outside a group, and takes younger pupils after a consultation. Our approach is the same in principle and flexible in practice: children work briefly and playfully, teenagers get a coach who waits out the voice change, and adults arrive at every age, plenty of them not having sung since school.
Expect something audible inside the first handful of weeks, particularly if you already sing in an ensemble, because choir singers tend to arrive with a good ear sitting on top of an unexamined breath. Solo repertoire and audition preparation run on a longer clock, closer to a full academic year than a month.
They work well. Standard video calls are tuned for speech and quietly discard the high partials that tell a teacher what a voice is doing; ours was engineered for music, so the diagnosis is made on the real sound. It also removes a winter drive and the wait for a term to start. The trial costs nothing, so the sound quality is easy to judge for yourself.

Michigan State's College of Music lists eight choral ensembles. On its ensemble auditions page, the three that hold no audition are each described as open to all students in any degree program. The single ensemble the university publishes as accepting people from beyond the student body is the Choral Union, and it is administered not by the College of Music but by the Community Music School. So: a town of roughly 49,000 folded around a large university music faculty, with exactly one published way in. SIRIUS Music School offers a second, and it does not run on a semester.
Because that published route is a strong one and it still arrives with a fixed shape. Choral Union rehearses Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Asbury Hall at 1120 South Harrison Road, costs 90 dollars a semester with scores included, carries between 125 and 150 voices, and asks newcomers to sing the first verse of America, the Beautiful at a placement audition held at 6:00 p.m. on two published Wednesdays in September. Its own eligibility line covers MSU students and individuals from the Greater Lansing area.
If Wednesday evening belongs to something else in your life, none of that is available to you, and the obstacle is the calendar rather than your voice. A lesson has no fixed night, no placement piece, and no term to wait for.
Standing among 150 singers and being listened to on your own are two separate experiences, and only the first one comes with a published day and hour. Your coach opens by hearing you alone: how the air is managed, where the range stops being comfortable, what the tuning does when the line sits high and long.
Choirs train singers to blend, which is a genuine craft and also a way for an individual voice to disappear for years at a time. One-on-one work is where it comes back out, and where habits that a section can absorb finally get named.
The groundwork comes first: breath that supports a full phrase, intonation that survives fatigue, an even crossing through the passaggio, and stamina that outlasts a two-hour rehearsal.
After that come the things a sectional has no minutes for. Solo diction, dynamic shaping, the phrasing decisions a conductor normally makes for you, and repertoire selected because it suits your instrument rather than because it balances a room.

Recording a lesson means you can set September beside November and hear the change instead of arguing about it. The exercises your coach sets are kept in the SIRIUS Workspace, available at whatever hour your practice actually happens, which for most students in this town is not the hour they planned.
The Wharton Center on East Shaw Lane brings touring Broadway through, and the College of Music fills Fairchild Theatre and Cook Recital Hall with a calendar that students can attend free with a ticket; its box office in the Music Building on West Circle Drive runs Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Peoples Church at 200 West Grand River Avenue lists a Sanctuary Choir on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and writes that anyone and everyone are invited, with Clarion Ringers on Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. open to any adult. St. John on MAC Avenue rehearses Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.; St. Thomas Aquinas on Alton Road, Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Queer Heart of Michigan Voices auditions at Eastminster Presbyterian on Abbot Road and states that any queer adult is welcome regardless of vocal range.
The Community Music School publishes that private voice work begins once a voice is mature enough to gain from instruction outside group singing, which it puts at roughly age 16, with younger students taken after a consultation. We follow the same reasoning and adjust the material rather than the door policy: brief and playful for children, unhurried while a teenage voice settles, and open-ended for adults. Note that the town's headline statistics are shaped by a large student population, so the median household figures describe undergraduates far more than they describe the person reading this.
Look at the published choral calendar and the adult evening options cluster on Wednesday and Thursday, at a fixed hour set by somebody else. That is fine if your week has a spare one. If it does not, an hour you place yourself is the whole difference between singing and intending to.
Lesson one is free, and the hour still goes entirely on teaching. Bring something to sing, be heard properly, and finish knowing which part of your technique is carrying you and which part is holding you back.
This town is saturated with music, and most of what it publishes is arranged around a group. Start with an hour that is not. Finding out what it does costs you nothing.
