<p>The school on Wall Street publishes its rates plainly: a 16-week semester of weekly private lessons runs $880 for half an hour, $1,256 for 45 minutes and $1,632 for the full hour, plus $20 registration per semester. That is their price, not ours, and ours is arranged differently: lessons at SIRIUS begin at $29, and lesson length and frequency decide the rest. What comes first is given rather than sold: an unbilled hour in which a teacher works on your singing, and only then do you decide.</p>
<p>The plainest answer in this city comes from the chorus that was created for exactly this doubt. The Songweavers were founded, in their own account, for women who were afraid to sing, and the group remains "open without audition to women and teens" with "no musical experience or note-reading" required. Fear, not talent, is what most people are actually describing when they say they cannot sing. The first weeks of a lesson go on pitch accuracy and breath, both of which answer to instruction and neither of which anybody is born knowing.</p>
<p>The music school here runs a youth chorus and a separate teen chorus, which is a fair guide to where group singing starts. Lessons start earlier and finish later. Somewhere around seven a child can hold a weekly session, as long as the material is theirs. The teenage years are the ones most worth having a teacher for, since the voice is changing and bad habits set fast. And the Concord Chorale, which does hold auditions, still says it welcomes singers of all ages.</p>
<p>Concord's own calendar gives a usable measure. The Chorale opens its cycle with a September open sing and performs on the first weekend of December, about eleven weeks from first rehearsal to concert; the music school counts a semester as 16 weeks. Within about six weeks a phrase will hold to its last word and loud singing will stop costing you the tone. A full season carries you to a solo line in public. Register work and endurance run to a year or more, and they arrive in steps rather than smoothly.</p>
<p>The music school on Wall Street answers this without meaning to: one of the voice teachers on its faculty page is listed as teaching remotely and only remotely. What the format needs is honest sound, a correction that comes back immediately, and a recording you can revisit during the week, and a video lesson provides all three. What it removes is the drive, the parking and the winter roads.</p>

The Barbershop Harmony Society's chapter directory carries an oddity on one line: "Concord Coachmen Chorus / Concord, NH Chapter / 10 School Street Allenstown, NH". The chorus calls itself a men's chorus based in Concord and rehearses Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in another town. Its rooms are documented one by one: the YMCA, the White Park Recreation Building from 1964 to 1976, the West Street Ward House, the music school at 23 Wall Street from 2002, and Allenstown since 2011. Four addresses inside the city, then one beyond it.
Because belonging to a singing group here is attached to a name and a night rather than to a room in town. The Concord Chorale, the auditioned ensemble, is a post office box on paper and holds its open sing in someone else's building. The city's own auditorium keeps a list of 21 groups that call it home, and exactly one is a vocal ensemble. If a room in the city was never what made you part of the singing here, an hour that needs no room at all is not a departure. It is the same arrangement, one step further.
Consider how the open chorus that takes women and teens without audition actually works. The Songweavers learn everything by ear: the director sings each part and the chorus sings it back, in call and response, and recordings of every individual part are handed out so members can take them home. It is a fine way to teach a room, and it cannot tell any one woman in that room why her third phrase keeps arriving under the note. That question needs somebody listening to one voice, which nobody leading a full chorus is placed to do.
Copying a line back teaches you the line and leaves your own production of it untouched, and that is where a lesson goes to work. Air comes first, because a phrase that gives out before its last word is the fault everybody hears. Steadiness of pitch follows, and it is a different task alone than it is in a section. Then the passage between registers, where most untrained voices audibly change gear, then tone, then the endurance to hold a whole evening. Notation is offered rather than required.
The teacher is matched to your repertoire rather than to whoever had a free slot, and the first hour carries no invoice, so you can hear the arrangement work before agreeing to it. From there the times are yours: a Tuesday morning, a Thursday night, a Saturday before the day starts, moved whenever the week demands it. You can sing barbershop, hymn, jazz or something written this year, and there is no season, no chapter and no open sing to sit through first.
The music school on Wall Street settled this question in its own faculty list. Of all the voice teachers named there, one carries a location note, and the note is not a street address: it reads "remote only". A voice arriving down a line is already part of how singing is taught in this city. The city has been the seat of state government since 1808, and its State House, finished in 1819, is the oldest capitol in the country whose legislature still meets in its original chambers. Nevers' Second Regiment Band was created by order of Governor Nathaniel S. Berry in 1861, and Arthur Nevers, whose name it carries, conducted it from 1884 until his death in 1940. The Concord City Auditorium, built alongside City Hall in 1904 and known locally as the Audi, seats between 835 and 841 people depending on how the orchestra rows are set. And at 23 Wall Street the music school gives away 40 minutes of music at midday: Bach's Lunch runs from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. on the first and second Thursdays of the month, October through May, open to the public and free of charge.
The open doors in this city are unusually explicit about what they do not ask for. The Songweavers are "open without audition to women and teens", and state outright that "no musical experience or note-reading is required". South Church says the same of its Chancel Choir, which rehearses Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Concord Chorale, which does audition, still calls itself open to singers of all ages. Lessons sit alongside all of that: a short weekly half hour for a child, steady work through the years when a teenage voice is changing, and nothing at the far end that rules anybody out.
This city already treats the morning as a real time to sing. The Songweavers hold the same rehearsal twice on a Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and again from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and members are told they may come to one or both. The Sunset Singers, who sing in small groups for hospice patients, rehearse on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Both are fixed points on somebody else's calendar. A lesson is the version where the fixed point is yours, and where changing it costs a message rather than a season.
Bring a song you can already get through, sing it once, and listen to somebody describe what happened in it: the bar where the support gave way, the vowel that spread, the interval that sat low. Then decide whether you want a second one. No excerpt is assigned, no sight-reading is set, and nobody is measuring your general musicianship.
A chorus here can hold the city's name in a national register and hold its Thursday rehearsal in another town, and nobody finds that strange. Membership in the singing life of Concord has never really been a matter of which building you drove to. It is a matter of turning up regularly and being heard. An hour a week that arrives wherever you are does both of those things.
