Locally an hour tends to sit between $50 and $90, scaling with the teacher's training. No invoice goes out for the first session, which means the thing you are actually assessing is the teaching.
Nearly everyone. Trinity Episcopal here puts it about as plainly as it can be put: anyone who enjoys singing is invited to join the choir, member of the parish or not, experience or not. That is the actual entry requirement in most places.
About seven, in short lessons. Adolescence rebuilds the instrument and rewards continuity over a year away from it. Adults begin at any age; in a university town a fair number begin after retiring from something unrelated.
Eight weeks of consistent work is audible on tape. A year of it is audible in a room. Beyond that the gains come in smaller pieces, and the pieces get more interesting.
They do. Hearing you exactly and showing you the repair are the two things a teacher has to get across, and a solid link manages both. It also spares you parking near the Mall on a Friday.

Charlottesville is an independent city, which in Virginia means it belongs to no county at all; it is nonetheless the seat of Albemarle County, which surrounds it completely. About forty-four thousand people live inside the city limits and roughly two hundred and twenty-nine thousand across the wider metropolitan area, which takes in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson. The university and its health system dominate employment - some twenty-seven thousand students between them - with the wine country of the Monticello appellation, recognized since 1984 and now carrying more than forty wineries, filling out the rest. Richmond is seventy-two miles east, Washington ninety-nine to the north.
Because the range of things to sing in here is wide and the entry requirements vary enormously, which is exactly when a teacher earns their keep. At the open end, the Trinity Episcopal choir asks for no audition and explicitly welcomes people who are not members of the parish. St. Paul's Memorial runs a parish choir of thirty-odd volunteers alongside two paid choral scholars. Above that the bar rises: the Oratorio Society of Virginia, singing since 1968, auditions every applicant on range, pitch and sight-reading before Monday rehearsals at the Municipal Arts Center; the Virginia Consort, formed in 1990, auditions for all of its adult ensembles; and Charlottesville Opera, founded in 1978 as Ash Lawn Opera, holds community chorus auditions each February at which adults prepare ninety seconds from memory, unaccompanied. The Virginia Glee Club, founded in 1871 and running continuously since 1915, is the rare university ensemble that will hear townspeople as well as students.
Ninety seconds from memory with nothing underneath you is a genuinely exposing thing to do, and no amount of rehearsal in a section prepares you for it. That preparation is a private matter between one singer, one teacher and whatever the recording reveals.
Air and support get settled first, because every layer above them takes its cue from what they do. Then pitch that will not wobble under nerves, a range that arrives whole instead of in steps, and the stamina to still be intact at the close of a program. Phrasing, language and stage manner are added last, and they are what lands.
Somebody picks your teacher deliberately, having read which ninety seconds you are eventually going to have to sing from memory. The introduction is on the house. Hours are yours to set, and to shift when the semester does.
Teaching a voice is mostly a matter of hearing one exactly, so the sound was engineered first and the picture takes the remainder. A gripping jaw, a line emptying early - the teacher names both while the phrase is still running. Everything the hour produces stays in your workspace.
The Dave Matthews Band was formed here in 1991. Matthews himself was born in Johannesburg and only moved to Charlottesville in 1986; he was tending bar at Miller's on the Downtown Mall when he put the group together with Carter Beauford, LeRoi Moore and Stefan Lessard, and their first public performance was on the fourteenth of March 1991 at Trax, a club that closed in 2001 and was demolished the following year. The Paramount opened on Thanksgiving Eve 1931 as a Rapp and Rapp picture palace, went dark in 1974, and reopened just over a thousand seats in December 2004 after a restoration costing something near eighteen million dollars. The Jefferson Theater dates from 1912 and came back as a music venue in November 2009. Ting Pavilion, at the east end of the Mall, has been running its free Fridays After Five series into a thirty-third season. The university's a cappella tradition is deep and datable - the Virginia Gentlemen from 1953, the Virginia Belles from 1977, the Hullabahoos from December 1987, the Academical Village People from 1993 - and a new Center for the Arts, with a twelve-hundred-seat hall, has moved past schematic design toward construction.

Hospital shifts, a semester calendar and a downtown where parking is a small project in itself all argue against a weekly obligation somewhere across the city. An hour at your own piano argues with nothing.
Start with the unbilled hour. Sing something familiar, then listen to the first thing your teacher says about it.
A city where a bartender assembled one of the largest touring bands in America can accommodate one more person learning to sing properly. Begin a few blocks off the Mall.
