<p>Spicer's Music, whose subject list takes in voice, quotes $145 a month as a flat rate for a student. Alongside it sit two membership costs rather than teaching costs: the civic chorale asks $50 a semester and the community band asks nothing at present, and neither of those buys instruction in your own voice. Our own scale opens at $29 a lesson, with no charge for the introductory hour that comes first.</p>
<p>The university's own audition sheet is the clearest answer available locally, because it names what is actually assessed: a familiar song, an eight-measure melody read at sight, and visible facial expression and vocal energy. None of the three is a talent you either possess or lack. Each is a habit that can be built, and the reading one in particular is nothing more than practice arranged in the right order. If you can hear that two notes differ, you have the equipment.</p>
<p>Seven is early enough to begin, as long as lessons stay short and rest on material the child already likes. Both local ensembles set their floor at college age or older, and the university choirs address themselves to enrolled students. That leaves the years between a school choir and adulthood without much to join. Private lessons fill exactly that gap, and nothing shuts the door at the far end either, which matters for adults who assume the moment has passed.</p>
<p>A semester is the natural unit here, and it is a reasonable one. Breath control tends to move in the opening weeks, and it is usually the first difference anybody notices. Steady pitch tends to settle across the second and third month. Reading well enough to handle an eight-measure line cold takes longer and depends on how often you open a score. Tone and placement go on developing for years, which is why trained singers still book lessons well after they have stopped sounding like beginners.</p>
<p>They do, and for this area they solve a practical problem as well as a musical one. A lesson is wherever you are. Musically, a video lesson gives one voice undivided attention. Your pitch can appear against the written note as you sing it, and every session is kept, so progress ends up documented rather than estimated.</p>

East Alabama Arts runs two ensembles that anybody college-age or older can join without an audition, provided they have done it before. The community band meets Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the band room of Auburn Junior High School on South Dean Road, and states that no dues are required at this time. The civic chorale meets Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Southside Center for the Arts on Glenn Street in Opelika, and asks $50 a semester. Same organizer, same half hour of the evening, same entry rule. The singing half is the one that costs $50 and meets in Opelika.
Because the other route into singing here is a university one, and it is fenced accordingly. Auburn University lists nine choral ensembles, among them a chamber choir of approximately 45 highly select singers and a gospel choir of approximately 50 singers, instrumentalists and dancers. Every one of them auditions, and the published admission wording describes entering, new and current undergraduate or graduate students. Whatever the position of an adult from the town, the route through campus begins with a hearing and a semester, and the route through East Alabama Arts begins with prior choral experience you either have or do not.
Look at what that university hearing actually measures, because it is written out in full. A familiar song, with the national anthem or Happy Birthday offered as examples. Sight-reading a simple eight-measure melody on solfege, a single syllable or numbers. And observable evidence of facial expression and vocal energy. Three separate abilities, assessed in a few minutes, with no diagnosis attached. A lesson reverses that. The point is not the verdict but the reason behind it, and it takes longer than a few minutes to arrive at.
Those three requirements make a decent curriculum on their own. The familiar song is really a test of breath and steadiness under mild pressure. The eight-measure melody is reading, which is a separate skill from singing and improves only by doing it slowly and often. Facial expression and vocal energy sound like showmanship and are largely physical: jaw, soft palate, and where the sound is placed. Add the register change, which the audition does not test and a listener still hears, and you have the ordinary content of a first year.
No prior experience is asked for, which is the one requirement both local ensembles share. There is no semester fee, no drive to the next town along on a fixed weeknight, and no advantage lost by being heard after February 1. You keep one teacher, the material follows whatever you are hoping to sing, and you begin in a week that suits you rather than one the calendar picks.
Sight-reading and pitch accuracy both improve faster when the feedback is immediate rather than remembered. A screen can show the note you produced beside the note written down, while you are still holding it, which shortens the loop from minutes to seconds. Recording every lesson does the same job over a longer span: an eight-measure melody read in October and the same melody read in February make a comparison that neither you nor your teacher could reconstruct from memory.
Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is the oldest Black congregation in Auburn, organized just after the Civil War, and the first African American church put up in Auburn after the war; its members raised the building around 1870 from hand-hewn logs hauled in by mules, on land granted to a member in 1865. In December 1868 Ebenezer was one of 27 churches that sent delegates to found the Colored Baptist Convention of Alabama. The building carries a National Register listing dated May 21, 1975; the congregation used it until 1969, the Auburn Heritage Association restored it in 1970, and it now houses the Unitarian Universalist fellowship. Since March 1996 that same room has held the Sundilla Concert Series at 450 E. Thach Avenue, founded in 1993 and now past 400 concerts by more than 250 different acts from at least 41 states and nine countries, its name honoring a member of the Creek tribe who once owned the land. The Jay and Susie Gogue Center for the performing arts opened on campus in 2019.
Ebenezer runs three choirs and schedules them by position in the month rather than by week: the mass choir on Tuesdays before the first and fifth Sunday, the gospel chorus on the Tuesday before the second, the men's choir on the Tuesday before the fourth. The Auburn Sacred Harp singing at St. Dunstan's on East Magnolia Avenue is set the same way in the minute books, on the Saturday before the third Sunday in January, with entries from 2004 onward. These are patterns worth knowing. A lesson has no position in anybody's month and no minimum age but the one your attention span sets.
Getting to any of this is its own problem. Tiger Transit belongs to the university and is not open to the general public except on game days, and Lee-Russell Public Transit is a free curb-to-curb dial-a-ride covering Auburn, Opelika and two counties, with rides booked by telephone during office hours rather than caught at a stop. If the room you sing in is in the next town along, that is a standing arrangement to make every week. A lesson taken at home takes the journey out of the arithmetic altogether.
No fee attaches to the first session, and it answers the questions the local doors assume you settled years ago. Can you hold a pitch you have just heard. Does your breath survive a whole phrase. What happens where the voice shifts from one gear into the next. You sing something familiar, read a couple of short lines, and hear back a plain account of which of those three is furthest behind and what would move it. Nothing is signed and no term begins.
One door wants a semester and an audition on campus. The other wants a fee, a Tuesday and a drive to Opelika. Both want experience you gathered somewhere earlier. That earlier somewhere is the part these doors do not provide. Weekly work with a single teacher is what that looks like, and it can start at your own house long before either door comes into it.
