After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

In the District, piano is taught at a nonprofit arts center that publishes its rates, at a nonprofit community music school that lists piano among its lessons, at a public arts high school that admits by audition, and in degree programs at two universities. Registration at the arts center runs by semester, and the high school's instrumental music program re-auditions its students every year. Baltimore is 34.9 miles away in a straight line, so the choice here comes down to timing rather than travel.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no parking, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher follows your hands and your posture on camera, stops you where a passage goes wrong, and works from the same sheet music you have open. A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. One nonprofit arts center in the District publishes its piano rates: $53 for 30 minutes, $77 for 45 minutes and $101 for an hour of private instruction.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons. Piano asks two hands to do different things at once, so the early work is hand position, reading both clefs and keeping a steady pulse. A first piece that uses both hands together tends to arrive after a stretch of regular practice, and the exercises in your Workspace are what carry the days in between.

Your teacher follows your hand position and your posture on camera and can stop you mid-phrase, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. In person, the arts center's lesson program for piano, voice and guitar in the District includes weekly lessons and two to three recitals a year.

Piano is a major instrument at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, a public arts high school in the District where admission is by audition. Every instrumental student there takes one year of piano, and seniors prepare a twenty-minute solo recital. The University of the District of Columbia offers a bachelor's degree in music with keyboard as one of five performance concentrations and keeps a digital piano lab, and at Howard University piano is taught up to the master's level. In September 2026, a regional music teachers' association held its first conference at Howard.
The Phillips Collection has presented concerts in its Music Room since 1941; its 2026-27 season, the eighty-sixth, has thirty concerts. Washington Performing Arts has a solo piano recital in its Recitalist Series on November 14, 2026. The Friday Morning Music Club, founded in Washington in 1886, runs three home piano groups for adult members that meet monthly from September to June.
