In 1972 he bought a 1915 church building on South Trenton Avenue and made it The Church Studio, home of Shelter Records. The keyboard has never been a side instrument in this town.
Because the instrument is built into what happens here. The Church Studio was restored and reopened to the public in 2022 and sits on the National Register of Historic Places, so the room where Russell cut his records is a place you can actually walk into. A few minutes west, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center has been running since 1977 and serves as home base for the Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Opera and Chamber Music Tulsa, which means concerto nights and chamber programs where the piano carries the hall. Downtown at the Jazz Depot in the old Union Depot building, the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame keeps the state's jazz and blues lineage on display, a tradition where a left hand playing boogie and barrelhouse patterns did the job a bass player does now.
