After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

Topeka has the keyboards and the festivals, and the prices are the thin part: the university keeps its piano program for its own students, and only one provider we found in the city prints a price for a lesson. The teachers association directory lists two piano studios here and not one amount. An online lesson is open to anyone and carries its price in front.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. One provider we found in Topeka publishes a lesson price, and it is a music store: half-hour lessons start at $20 and are booked a month at a time. The university publishes festival fees of $10 to $35 for a day, which buy a festival place rather than a lesson.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.

The university in the city keeps a teaching room with 17 full-size electronic keyboards, a group controller and headset stations, and calls it a room for group piano instruction. Its keyboard program - private study, solo repertoire, compulsory collaborative piano, duets and piano duo - speaks throughout of keyboard students and music majors, and names no way in for anyone else.
What it does open to outsiders are two piano days a year for school-age students, run by its own piano and organ society, with fees of $10 and $20 to $35 for the day - a festival fee, not a lesson price. The one lesson price we found published in the city belongs to a music store: from $20 a half hour, booked in monthly blocks. Of the four school districts in the county, one is the city district, and its course catalog lists nine instrumental courses and no piano course.
