Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. We found no published piano rate in Taunton, and a music store in neighboring Raynham, about two miles from the center of town, offers piano lessons without listing a price.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Taunton runs its own public school district, Taunton Public Schools, with twelve schools from a preschool to Taunton High School. The high school's band program is backed by a parents' booster club, registered as a nonprofit at the school's address. A brass band, the Taunton City Band, has held nonprofit status in the city since 1981. The federal register of tax-exempt groups shows no nonprofit music school or conservatory with a Taunton address; for-profit teaching is not part of that list.
Downtown, Taunton Performing Arts Center took shape in 2024, when two Taunton-based theater companies merged, and it announced fourteen plays and musicals for its 2025/2026 season; The Addams Family Musical runs from October 16 to 25, 2026. Its private lessons are in voice and acting, not piano. Bristol Community College's Taunton Center, also downtown, opens its auditorium, with four hundred seats, for community events, though its Taunton program list includes no music program.
