After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. We found no published rate for private piano lessons in Phenix City; the community college's 2026-2027 catalog lists $225 a semester for an Alabama resident taking a one-credit Class Piano group course, tuition and required fees included.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.

Phenix City Schools, the city's own district, runs a band program from sixth through twelfth grade on three campuses: Phenix City Intermediate School, South Girard School, with a concert band and a pep band in eighth grade, and Central High School, where the Red Devil Regiment joins a symphonic band, a concert band, a percussion class and a color guard. Central High School hosted the 42nd Central Phenix Invitational Marching Festival on September 26, 2026.
Chattahoochee Valley Community College, open in the city since 1974, teaches four levels of Class Piano as group classes for students with little or no previous training, two lab hours a week for one credit, with no prerequisite in the 2026-2027 catalog. Adults not working toward a degree can enroll as unclassified students. The Alabama Music Teachers Association lists ten local chapters, none for Phenix City; its Auburn-Opelika chapter is 28.8 miles off in a straight line.
