Tell us what you want to play and we match you with one of more than 150 guitar teachers, taking your own criteria into account. The first lesson is a free trial lesson with no obligation, and you decide after it whether to carry on.
After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
The first clean chord changes under a steady strum tend to come with a few weeks of regular playing. How far you go from there depends on how often you pick the guitar up between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private guitar lesson works with the guitar you already have, acoustic, electric or classical, one-on-one and without waiting for a group to catch up. In a one-on-one lesson all 45 minutes go to one player's hands and one player's questions.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. The early lessons are about posture, first chords and a steady strumming hand, and reading tabs and notes comes along the way. Some of our teachers specialize in guitar for beginners, others teach advanced and professional players, and every lesson is built around the songs and styles you want to play.
Durham has two music stores that teach guitar on site, a chain store and an independent shop with its own school, while the guitar courses at the university are credit courses for its students. So online lessons here are a question of fit, not distance: you can try teachers until one matches the music you are after, set a lesson day that works around school or a shift, and play at home on the guitar you already own.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no guitar case to carry, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher watches both of your hands on camera and stops you where a chord change buzzes or a rhythm drifts. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.
SIRIUS has over 150 guitar teachers, part of more than 400 music teachers across vocals, piano and guitar. Every one of them is vetted and handpicked before a single lesson, carries a SIRIUS certification, and stays in regular training and quality control. We teach every level and every age, from a first lesson to stage-ready.
You are matched rather than assigned: tell us your style, whether classical, rock, jazz or fingerstyle, along with your goals and your schedule, and we find the teacher who fits them. Lessons run live over video on software we developed ourselves for music lessons, so the sound carries the detail a guitar lesson depends on. In the SIRIUS Workspace your guitar sheet music is there for you outside of lessons too.
More hours = a better price per hour. Every plan: 45-min one-on-one lessons with vetted teachers.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. Locally, one music school in the city publishes $140 a month for a weekly 30-minute lesson, and the chain store we checked posts no lesson price.
Either one works, and the guitar you actually want to play is usually the better choice, because that is the one you will pick up. An electric tends to have lighter strings, which is easier on the fingers at first; a steel-string acoustic needs no extra equipment. If you are unsure, a common piece of advice is to start on an acoustic. Our lessons cover acoustic, electric and classical guitar, so the one you already own is a fine place to begin.
Many children are ready for guitar at around six or seven, and some not until ten or eleven, which is normal. Readiness counts for more than the birthday: real interest in playing, the ability to sit and focus for a stretch, and hands that reach around a guitar neck sized for a child. The free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons, so the number of lessons differs from one student to the next. The early work is posture, first chords and keeping the strumming hand steady, and you can start on your favorite songs right away and build from there. Your teacher sets the pace with you after the trial lesson.
Yes, and for guitar the camera covers what matters. A guitar lesson is mostly listening, demonstrating and repeating, and none of that needs the same room. Your teacher sees your fretting hand and your picking hand on camera, can stop you on a buzzing note or an uneven strum, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. In Durham you can take guitar lessons in person at two stores, one a chain and one an independent shop with a school, and Raleigh, the nearest larger city, is 20.8 miles away.

Durham Public Schools gives guitar a place in its arts program. The district's arts office runs a teachers' working group called "6-12 Orchestra (Guitar)", and Durham School of the Arts, for grades six to twelve, names guitar beside band, strings and piano in its course guide description. The high school course guide we read lists no numbered guitar course. Duke University's music department teaches Class Guitar and an Intermediate Guitar course for credit to its students.
Two music stores in the city teach guitar. A chain store lists fifteen teachers, five of whom teach guitar, and offers rentals. An independent community music store runs a school with seven lesson rooms and five guitar teachers, keeps a repair bench for fretted instruments, and hosts free learning jams where guitar players sit in with fiddlers and singers of all levels. We found no guitar course at Durham Technical Community College or North Carolina Central University.
